Transitions and Playing with Numerical Superiority

Duration: 90 minutes
Objective: Improve quick transitions and the ability to play in numerical superiority situations, optimizing decision-making and mobility.

  1. Warm-up (10 minutes)
Description: Active mobility with an emphasis on leg speed to prepare players for the quick movements they will execute during the session.

Exercises:

  • Agility and Speed Drill: 5, 3 man passing drill: Quick leg movements, including direction changes and accelerations.

  • Dynamic Stretching: Focused on preparing the legs for the intensity of transition and movement exercises.

Benefit: This warm-up improves reaction speed and agility, preparing players to move quickly during transitions and changes in direction.

  1. Technical Work (30 minutes)
Description: Exercises to improve quick transitions and effective movements, helping players quickly switch between defense and attack.

Exercises:

Benefit: These exercises teach players to make quick and precise decisions during transitions, focusing on speed to take advantage of fast break opportunities.

  1. Tactical Work (30 minutes)
Description: Exercises focused on working in numerical superiority situations, simulating quick transitions in both attack and defense.

Exercises:

  • Drill 1: 4v3 Half Field Fast Break With Trailer: Develops offensive and defensive coordination in a fast break, simulating real-game situations where the offensive team has a numerical advantage (4v3), with a "trailer" following the play to exploit open spaces.

  • Drill 2: Pass, pick and slip: Reinforces players' ability to create space, execute effective picks, and finish plays quickly, using the numerical advantage to create scoring opportunities.

Benefit: These exercises work on team coordination in numerical superiority situations, developing the ability to move the ball quickly and make intelligent decisions to finish attacking plays.

  1. Games/Competition (10 minutes)
Description: A small-sided game that allows players to apply transition skills and playing in numerical superiority situations in a more dynamic and competitive environment.

Exercise: Up 1 Add 1 Transition drill: A game where players must apply what they've learned about quick transitions and how to play in numerical superiority situations, emphasizing quick decision-making and team cooperation.

Benefit: The small-sided game simulates match situations where players can practice and refine what they've learned in the previous drills while competing in a high-pressure environment.

  1. Cool-down (10 minutes)
Description: Stretching and muscle relaxation, with an emphasis on the legs, to prevent injuries and aid recovery.

Exercises:

  • Static Leg Stretches: Includes stretches for the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves to relax muscles and improve flexibility.

  • Muscle Relaxation: Deep breathing and relaxation exercises to decrease muscle tension after the session.

Benefit: The cool-down helps reduce the risk of injury and aids muscle recovery after intense exercises.

Benefits of the Session
This session focuses on improving quick transitions between defense and attack, with an emphasis on handling numerical superiority situations. Drills like the West Genny (3v2 Fast Break) and the Full Field 2v1 Ground Ball help improve effective transitions after ball recovery, while the 4v3 Half Field Fast Break With Trailer and Pass, Pick and Slip develop skills to take advantage of the numerical advantage in real-game situations. The small-sided game allows players to apply what they've learned in a competitive environment.
